Chapter Four

“Erm, I’m looking for a job.” Not the most imaginative introduction but when faced with a vampire twice my width and with a permanent scowl displaying prominent and very sharp fangs, I found my eloquence lacking.

“Human or vamp?” He spat…literally, all over the pavement, just to the left of me. Nice.

“Vamp,” I replied. “Was turned a year or so ago.”

“Right, follow me.”

I didn’t need to be vamp to feel the oppressive fear associated with the place I walked into. It was made to discourage visitors. Huge, thick walls with gates twelve foot tall, and serious gates they were—high and without a chink of an opportunity to peek through them.

One set of gates led to another and we waited while the first ones were pulled closed. Aquino didn’t want anyone to see what was going on in his house, of that I was sure. It looked like a mansion. Huge, dark bricked and with a perfectly manicured lawn and driveway out front. It didn’t scream evil villain hideout but the aura of the place raised the hairs on the backs of my arms, and I hadn’t realized that was possible for a vampire.

“Is Marsden in his office?” the gruff guard asked his counterpart guarding the inner sanctum. That lackey was tall and thin with so many scars his skin looked like a patchwork quilt.

“Fink so,” was the succinct reply. I followed brick shithouse guard in through the front door and along a corridor that felt like it belonged in a National Trust country property.

At the office, Shithouse knocked, nodded at me then walked away. I stood where I was and waited.

“Come in!” If the voice was anything to go by the guy behind the thick paneled door wasn’t going to be very friendly. When I walked in, I realized my intuition was right.

“What do yer want? Make it quick.” The guy behind the desk oozed old style mobster. Deep ridged eyebrows, dark hair, square jaw. He even had a pinstripe suite and a fedora hat to match. His accent was American too. Possibly he was an original gangster.

“Erm, hi. I’m here for a job. I’m a vampire.”

“Oh right, yeah.” He looked me up and down like I was a slab of meat. If I was human I’d have wet my pants. “Well, I suppose you might do. Have you worked in security before…erm…what’s yer name?”

“Steve, Steve Johnson. And yeah, used to be a bouncer for a bit when I was human.”

That job had lasted a week. I got my head kicked in for hitting on a guy’s missus but this Marsden guy didn’t need to know that.

“Okay, so you has experience—that’s good, that’s good. A bit scrawny for outer duty but I think you could do for interior.”

He scribbled something on a piece of paper then stood up and stretched. He was tall, wide and I’d never hope to beat him in a fight.

“Well, mate, start immediately. Shifts are variable and there’s digs on site. I’ll get one of the lads to show you ‘round.
